Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley (D-10) Announces Nomination of Old Cook County Hospital to National Register of Historic Places

Nomination commemorates 93rd anniversary of placing of the hospital’s cornerstone

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH 8, 2006

Joined by other Cook County Commissioners and the city and state’s leading preservation advocates, Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley (D-10) on Wednesday morning announced his formal application to nominate the old Cook County Hospital to the National Register of Historic Places, the federal government’s list of the most important historic structures in the nation. The Commissioner made the announcement on March 8, the 93rd anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the old hospital.

“I have always said that I care deeply about the mission of Cook County,” said Commissioner Quigley. “Since its founding, one of the most significant aspects of that mission has been to care for those who have nowhere else to go; the poor, the marginalized, the most needy in our community. Nowhere is there a more significant symbol of this mission than Old Cook County Hospital.”

Commissioner Quigley’s nomination asserts that the Old Cook County Hospital qualifies as a National Register property because of its architectural and historic significance. Commissioner Quigley noted that Old Cook County Hospital is the site of the world’s first trauma center and the nation’s first blood bank.
