A south suburban steel mill's proposal to trade acres with the Cook County Forest Preserve District will be hashed out at a June 2 committee meeting.

Mittal Steel -- formerly ISG -- wants 21 forest preserve acres next to its Riverdale plant to allow for plant expansion.

It's willing to trade 31 acres across from the Whistler Woods Preserve.

Commissioner Mike Quigley has been a vocal critic of the swap, citing the district's own land-use policy and its strict rules for land sales.

The Friends of the Forest Preserves and south suburban Commissioner Liz Gorman also oppose the proposed swap.

But there is strong support for the deal from Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.), Commissioners Deborah Sims, who represents Riverdale, and Joan Murphy, who represents a neighboring district.
