Women's Issues

Commissioner Quigley's focus on women's rights is unfailing.

Domestic Violence
Commissioner Quigley led the fight on the Board for a new Domestic Violence Courthouse. As a result of his efforts, a new Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse at 555 West Harrison Street opened in September 2005. The previous courthouse located at 13th and Michigan in Chicago was grossly inadequate. The Commissioner was also instrumental in keeping the domestic violence advocacy community involved in the planning process, making sure that the new courthouse is easily accessible and safe.

Reproductive Justice
The pro-choice community has a true friend, ally, and leader in Mike Quigley. When the Guttmacher Institute recently documented a dramatic need for expanded reproductive health care services in Cook County, Commissioner Quigley and pro-choice advocates successfully fought to increase abortion services at Stroger Hospital.

Helping Sexual Assault Survivors
Commissioner Quigley recently secured additional county funding to provide rape victims at Stroger Hospital with specialized, 24 hour emergency room care and follow-up legal assistance. He also worked with Advocate Hospital system to increase the funding they provide to rape victim assistance programs.

Family Friendly Programs
After bringing the County's maternity/paternity leave policies into review, the commissioner helped implement a new policy that no longer requires employees to exhaust all leave time before taking maternity disability leave payments. Commissioner Quigley also wholeheartedly supported the combined effort of the city and the county to provide a first-ever day care center for their employees' children.
